When you see the first photos of Railay Beach, you might think it's a small island lost in the middle of the Andaman Sea.
Yet, Railay is well connected to the mainland.
The most astonishing thing? It’s impossible to get there by road.
The immense limestone cliffs surrounding the peninsula make any land access impossible. Here, the boat isn't an attraction, it's the only way to arrive.
And honestly, that's probably what makes Railay so magical.
An arrival that sets the tone
From Ao Nang, it's only about fifteen minutes by traditional longtail boat to reach Railay.
The price is generally 100 baht per person during the day.
From Ao Nam Mao, the crossing is even shorter.
Little by little, the cliffs appear before you.
The sea is becoming increasingly turquoise.
The colourful boats float in front of the beaches.
At that moment, one immediately understands why Railay is among Thailand's most famous landscapes.
A little corner of paradise… without cars
One of the first things we like about Railay is the silence.
There are no cars here.
No scooters whizzing around all the time.
You can only walk between the different beaches.
Everything seems calmer.
Simpler.
This atmosphere almost gives the impression of being on a small island, even though the mainland is just behind the cliffs.
The most beautiful beaches of Railay
Railay West
It is the best-known beach.
Upon your arrival, you will discover a vast white sandy beach surrounded by impressive cliffs.
The sunset there is magnificent.
This is also the best place to simply sit facing the sea with a fruit juice or a coconut.
Phra Nang Beach
For us, it's without hesitation the most beautiful beach in Railay.
Its turquoise water, its white sand and the immense cliffs that plunge into the sea offer an exceptional setting.
It is also home to the famous Princess Cave, known for its traditional offerings.
Even though the beach is busy during the day, it quickly becomes peaceful again in the late afternoon.
Tonsai Beach
Accessible on foot at low tide or by boat, Tonsai has a completely different vibe.
More bohemian.
More relaxed.
It mainly attracts climbers from all over the world and travellers seeking a simpler atmosphere.
The monkeys are at home
In Railay, it's almost impossible not to encounter macaques.
They are often spotted near the paths, around the viewpoint, or sometimes even near hotels.
They are fascinating to observe.
But we must never forget that they remain wild animals.
Our advice:
- Never feed them.
- Always keep your bag closed.
- Avoid leaving food visible.
They are particularly cunning and do not hesitate to grab a bottle or a bag left unattended.
Que faire à Railay ?
Even though many come solely for the beach, several activities are well worth the detour.
You can, among other things:
- Kayaking between the cliffs.
- Discover the Princess Cave.
- Climb up to the famous Railay Viewpoint.
- Continue to the hidden lagoon (be warned, the descent is steep).
- To introduce you to climbing, Railay being one of the best spots in Asia.
- Admire the sunset from Railay West.
- Enjoy the many small bars set up facing the sea.

One important thing to know before you come
Railay remains a relatively isolated place.
You won't find Seven Eleven like anywhere else in Thailand.
Instead, a few small local grocers allow you to buy the essentials.
The prices are also a little higher than in Ao Nang, since all the goods arrive by boat.
Our advice:
If you need to withdraw money or buy lots of provisions, do it before heading to Railay.
Where to stay in Railay?
If you have the opportunity, stay at least one night.
When the last boats depart back to Ao Nang, Railay changes completely.
The beaches are regaining their calm.
Restaurants are becoming more peaceful.
The atmosphere is totally different.

Our advice before you go
- Arrive early in the morning to enjoy the beaches before the excursions.
- Take enough cash.
- Travel with a backpack rather than a large suitcase if possible.

Our opinion
Railay is certainly no longer a secret.
But contrary to what one might think, she has managed to retain a real personality.
What we particularly like here is the blend of spectacular scenery, relaxed atmosphere and lack of traffic.
Yes, it's busy.
But if you take the time to spend a night there and enjoy the first hours of the day, you will discover a completely different side to Railay.
For us, it's an unmissable stop when travelling in the Krabi region.
