“I'm going to Southeast Asia in May, June or July… is that a bad time?”
The honest answer: No.
But this is also not a time when you can book anywhere with your eyes closed.
Because between May and July, The weather is becoming a game of strategy.
So where to go?
Some areas remain beautiful, others are becoming much more erratic.
And it's often here that travellers make the mistake of believing that “Thailand = the same climate everywhere”.
Spoiler: absolutely not.
Understanding the monsoon: what many imagine... and the reality
When you hear “rainy season”, you imagine:
- Rain all day
- Continuous grey sky
- ruined holiday
In Thailand (and much of Southeast Asia) this is generally not the case.
The monsoon often means:
- sunny or bright mornings
- sultry heat
- Intense but brief verses
- Heavy localised thunderstorms in the late afternoon or evening
In other words
One can travel, but not everywhere with the same expectations.
Thailand in May, June, July: the real areas to know
Northern Thailand: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai... or where to go?
May: a pivotal month
The north is just coming out of the dry heat of April.
- Temperatures still high
- first rains
- softly greening vegetation
The real advantage:
The air is finally more breathable than in April.
June – July: monsoon established
- Frequent verses
- magnificent jungle
- very green rice paddies
- full cascades
The atmosphere is becoming extremely beautiful visually.

✔ Perfect for:
- temples

⚠ Less than perfect for:
- slippery long walks

North conclusion: very doable and even superb if you accept the humidity.
Bangkok and Central Thailand: what's the difference?
Bangkok is hot all year round.
From May to July
- sultry heat
- High humidity
- often happens at the end of the day
Buts
- Shopping centres
- Rooftops
- temples

... everything remains perfectly achievable.
The real secret to Bangkok in the summer:
organise your days into blocks
- morning = outside
- afternoon = indoor activities
- evening = recovery after rain
Southern Thailand: this is where it all happens
Many think:
“I'm going south = I'll have the beach.
Error.
Southern Thailand is divided into two very different maritime climates.
Andaman Coast: Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Phi Phi
Still playable
We still have some lovely weather windows.
But the sea is beginning to change.
June – July: more random
- Rougher sea
- sky more overcast
- Excursions sometimes cancelled
- snorkelling less clear on certain days
You can have:
- Two magnificent days
- then a completely grey day
So it's not catastrophic...
but it is not the best choice for a “perfect beach postcard”.
The Andaman Islands in summer = a bigger weather lottery.
Gulf of Thailand: The true strategic zone of the summer
Koh Samui
Koh Phangan
Koh Tao
Between June and July:
- weather often more stable
- calmer sea
- sun/short showers alternating
- excursions still running
It is very clearly:
the best Thai seaside option for summer.
Koh Samui
- more developed
- more comfortable
- Ideal mix beach/hotel/restaurants
Koh Phangan
- wilder
- plus nature
- beautiful in summer
Koh Tao
- Snorkelling/diving still very good
- small island atmosphere
If someone asks me where to go in Thailand in July:
I'll start here.🌴 Koh Phangan: much more than the Full Moon
And the neighbouring countries? The real climate
Vietnam: a country of great contrasts
Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa)
- hot
- Very wet
- frequent storms
Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue)
Best time
- Pleasant beaches
- Bright weather
- good overall compromise
South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City)
- rainy season
- Heavy short showers
Vietnam asks to choose the correct geographical band.
Cambodia
- Very hot in May
- more rain June-July
- Angkor remains superb with a dramatic sky
- fewer tourists
⚠ High humidity but trip totally doable.
Laos
- more marked monsoon
- Sublime landscapes
- impressive waterfalls
- sometimes slow routes
Laos is becoming more contemplative, more slow.
So, should you avoid South East Asia in the summer?
No.
It simply requires:
- select the right regions
- accept some showers
- Don't build too rigid an itinerary
My honest advice if you're travelling between May and July
In Thailand:
- Bangkok yes
- North yes
- Golf yes++
- Andaman with caution
Vietnam
- prime location
Cambodia:
- Feasible if heat is accepted
Laos
- Beautiful but slower
The real advantage of travelling at this time
And it's huge:
- less crowd
- much greener landscapes
- often softer prices
- more authentic ambiance
Sometimes, a lightly overcast sky with a fluorescent jungle is much more beautiful than a dry and scorching March.
Thoroughly preparing your itinerary remains the key.
It's not the season that makes a trip fail.
It's often:
the wrong choice of regions at the wrong time.
A well-thought-out itinerary makes all the difference:
- Which islands to choose?
- How many days north?
- Should we go to Krabi or Samui?
- Combine with Vietnam/Cambodia?
- avoid which unnecessary journeys

FAQ – Thailand in May, June and July: Weather & Best Destinations
Can you travel to Thailand during the rainy season?
Yes, absolutely. The rainy season doesn't mean it rains all day long. The showers are often short but intense, with lovely sunny spells in between. You just need to choose the right regions.
Où aller en Thaïlande en juin ou juillet pour avoir du beau temps ?
The best destinations are generally in the Gulf of Thailand:
- Koh Samui
- Koh Phangan
- Koh Tao
These islands often benefit from a more stable climate than Phuket or Krabi during the summer.
Should Phuket and Krabi be avoided in the summer?
Not necessarily, but the Andaman coast is more exposed to the monsoon between June and July. The sea can be rough, some excursions cancelled, and the skies more overcast.
Are Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai pleasant in June?
Yes. Northern Thailand becomes very green at this time. The rains make the landscapes magnificent, even if the humidity is higher and thunderstorms are more frequent at the end of the day.
Is Bangkok practical during the monsoon season?
Yes, Bangkok remains lively all year round. The showers are usually short and it's easy to alternate between outdoor sightseeing and indoor activities.
Which neighbouring country to favour in May, June or July?
The centre of Vietnam is often a very good option at this time.
Cambodia remains feasible despite the heat.
Laos is superb for nature, but wetter and slower for travel.
Is this a good time for boat trips?
Yes, but not everywhere. In the Gulf of Thailand, sea excursions often remain very beautiful. On the Andaman coast, conditions can be more unpredictable depending on the wind and swell.
Are there fewer tourists in Thailand at this time?
Yes, and it's one of the main advantages. The sites are less crowded, the beaches are quieter and the prices are sometimes more attractive than in high season.
Does the rain stop you enjoying the beaches?
No. Many days alternate between sunshine and quick showers. It's perfectly possible to bathe, sunbathe, and go on excursions if you choose the weather wisely.
Quelle est la meilleure stratégie pour un voyage réussi en Thaïlande en été ?
Choose regions according to the current climate, avoid overly rigid itineraries and accept that tropical nature works differently than in Europe.
